Now, my internal imaginative universe filled with, not cartoon cookie animals, but superheroes, Superman and Batman and the Fantastic Four, then, eventually, creatures of my own devising. Quasar and Xan were the names of two of them. Quasar was a total rip-off of Marvel's Black Bolt, right down to the not speaking and the energy bolts that sprang from his fingertips. Xan was an android that could fly. That was it. Later, I came up with the superhero team that, fifty years later, would appear in Adam Forwarder as the Valids. I even remember an adventure where they joined Quasar and Xan. Nothing written down. It all just whirled around in my imagination when I twiddled my pencil, which I tried to do as much as I could, considering the fact that I attended school and read books and went to the library and hung out with my family and, very occasionally, a friend.
