The address Niki'd memorized belonged to a red brick house in a residential neighborhood.
"Cozy," Niki said.
"Looks like the kind of house anyone would love to call home."
"Huh."
The sun peeked over the horizon.
"What are we going to do, go up and knock?" Trevor asked.
"Unless you got a better idea."
They looked around for cops or drones or soldiers.
Nothing. The streets looked empty.
"Think we ought to uncloak?" Trevor asked.
"I'm not going to go visible at all. I don't think these assholes even know I'm here yet. I think you ought to stay invisible for the time being, too."
"Whatever you say, Mommy."
"Fuck you."
"Anytime."
"Twice is enough."
Knock. Knock.
Nothing.
"Knock louder," Niki said.
KNOCK! KNOCK!
A silhouette crossed behind the shade of the front window.
"That look like Abby to you?" Niki asked.
"Kind of. In a robe, maybe."
They heard fumbling at the front door.
The door opened.
Trevor's brother stood in the doorway.
"You were expecting Brad Pitt?" Cole asked.
Six drones dropped from the sky.
Weaponized.
And those weapons, lasers probably, were aimed right at the porch.
Behind Cole, Niki saw, not someone's home, but whole bunches of soldiers.
It'd been a trap, plain and simple.
"Before we talk, I need to see you," Cole said.
Nothing.
"Where else you got to go, Trevor?"
Trevor felt Niki touch his wrist. Then,
"Hi," Trevor said.
