As for Carter Paul:

     SCREECH!

He's after me! He's after me! I'll be dead it I can't get away from here in the next five seconds! A traffic barrier consisting of three cars running parallel and all running the exact same speed appeared before him. He swung on to the gravelly median, but it was no good. Now he slid sideways. Back on the highway, Paul fought to cut between two of the cars. That didn't work worth a damn, either. All he did was cause one of the cars to go veering off into oncoming traffic.  A car coming the other way now had to veer, and within moments that part of the highway dissolved into complete chaos. Loose metal and broken glass flew everywhere. Someone at the center of the disaster slammed on their brakes, causing a chain reaction of rear end collisions that extended to six cars. SCREECH! CRASH!

Then, above it all came this high, piercing female shriek louder than the screeching tires, louder than the crunching metal.  A shriek of terror? A shriek of agony?
