"Breathe," Malika said. "No, wait a second. What am I saying? Let's both breathe. Things have gotten so heavy all of sudden."
"Hah!"
"I'm going to ask you something, yes or no. Has all of this got anything to do with that dream that jolted you out of bed last night?"
Niki reacted like Malika had slapped her in the face. Her head even snapped back.
"Hit a nerve, huh?"
"Okay, you know what?" Niki unwrapped her own burrito. "I'm hungry."
They didn't talk for several minutes while they ate. Then,
"So good," Malika said.
"That dream I had last night?" Niki asked.
"The one where I was the pirate queen?"
Niki nodded towards the street.
"That guy on the sidewalk? He was in it. He was in my dream. I mean, he wasn't, but...shit." She pulled her phone out of her pocket. "I need to check on something."
"You're scaring me, Niki. I'm sure you know that."
"I'm scaring myself. I've got to tell you something, Mali, and this is something for you and you alone because you are the only true love of my life, and you know that."
"I hear a but at the end of that sentence."
"But, when I looked at that guy just now, I loved him, and I don't mean that in our way, but I thought, that man is my partner, I would die for that man and I would kill for that man, and what am I even talking about right now? His name's Trevor." She pointed the screen on her phone at her wife. "See? Trevor Harper. He's on Facebook."
It was him, all right.
"I see what you mean about the impossible, "Malika said.
